Doug
Liddle
The man
honoured in the annual memorial eventDoug
Liddle was in Go-Karting for over 30 years. He became
involved when the Barossa Go Kart Club had a dirt track
behind the Nuriootpa oval. The club saw the
opportunity to expand into bitumen karting and decided to
build a track on the site of the present track.
Doug, his wife Brenda and other members cleared the land and
built the original track. Over the years the circuit
has been enlarged and the facilities improved.
Doug was a real enthusiast, building and racing gokarts;
racing dirt track on Saturdays, then bitumen on Sundays!
Doug and his family traveled around the state racing
wherever a meeting was held. Doug raced at circuits
familiar with today's karters, Mt Gambier, Whyalla and
Mildura.
Karting has always been a family sport and soon he had his
two daughters involved in racing as well.
Not satisfied with just racing, Doug became involved in the
administration of the sport representing Barossa on the
Karting Council. He was appointed National Delegate
for South Australia and for ten years traveled all over
Australia to National Council meetings.
After a serious racing accident, Doug spent more time
preparing his daughter's karts and being an official.
He was Clerk of Course at major championships here and
interstate and well as local race meetings.
Of course Doug's heart was here in the Barossa, and with his
family worked hard to make the Barossa Go Kart Club what it
is today. In recognition of Doug's contribution to
karting he was made a life member of the Karting Council.
Here at the Barossa Go Kart Club we proudly have made Doug,
Brenda, his daughter Heather and her husband Arthur
life members.
When Doug became ill he felt he could no longer attend the
working bees or be an official, so he resigned to let other
members take on the running of the club.
Sadly Doug passed away in July 1993 but his memory lives on
in the race that bears his name, the Doug Liddle Memorial.
The Doug Liddle Memorial perpetual trophy
was donated by St Johns Ambulance, Angaston (Doug was an
ambulance officer) so his memory carries on.
